Soccer Injuries to the Foot and Ankle

Soccer can put a lot of stress on the foot and ankle. Activities such as running, side to side cutting, sliding or tackling all put the foot and ankle at risk of injury. Soccer athletes should be keep in mind the impact from kicking the ball or another player with the foot. The risk of ankle sprains, fractures, contusions and overuse should be considered as follows:

  • The most common type of ankle sprain occurs from the foot being inverted, or falling inward. This type of sprain can damage the ankle ligaments, and in some cases, be asociated with ankle fractures or peroneal tendon injuries.
  • Fractures of the ankle, metatarsals, and even Lisfranc fractures can prevent athletes from playing for months at a time. Some fractures may even require surgery.
  • Slide tackling and other high impact activities can cause contusions and bone bruises.
  • Overuse or strenuous activities may result in heel pain (plantar fasciitis), Achilles tendonitis, sesamoiditis, stress fractures or posterior tibial tendonitis (PTTD). Children and adolescents may develop calcaneal apophysitis.
