Basketball Injuries to the Foot and Ankle
Basketball really works the feet and ankles. Running, jumping, cutting quick starts and stops and direct contact with other players can all cause injury. Being aware of the following risks can help minimize injuries:
Inversion ankle sprains can be accompanied by peroneal tendon injuries and fractures. Athletes may damage the ankle ligaments and experience chronic ankle instability.
Excessive training or overuse can strain tendons and ligaments and lead to heel pain (plantar fasciitis), Achilles tendonitis, sesamoiditis, stress fractures or posterior tibial tendonitis (PTTD). Children and adolescents are particularly prone to developing calcaneal apophysitis.
