Common Foot Problems

Acute Inflammation

Inflammation is the initial response of the body to protect against injury or irritation, and begin the healing process after surgery. This natural protective process increases blood flow to the area where fluid accumulates. Symptoms of inflammation develop as the body begins its natural response. Symptoms include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Increased warmth and redness of the skin

There are two types of inflammation: acute and chronic. Acute inflammation involves an immediate response to an injury or surgery within the first two hours. Chronic inflammation is a continuous response to a medical condition that spans a longer time period, such as arthritis.

Inflammation is not synonymous with infection, even in instances where inflammation is caused by an infection. These are two separate conditions that require different treatments. Dr. Radovic can identify the cause of inflammation for each individual patient.

The injured tissues must be properly treated to effectively reduce inflammation and the accompanying swelling and pain. Earlier treatment shows better results.

Acute inflammation of the foot or ankle is initially treated with RICE therapy:

  • Rest the foot or ankle, as walking may lead to further injury.
  • Ice the injured area. A thin fabric should be placed between the ice pack and the skin. Apply the ice pack for 20 minutes, then allow at least 40 minutes before reapplication.
  • Compress the foot or ankle with an elastic wrap to control swelling.
  • Elevate the foot or ankle slightly above heart level to minimize swelling.

Dr. Radovic may prescribe a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as aspirin to be taken along with the above measures.

Symptoms of inflammation normally subside two to three days after injury. Pain and discomfort that continues after three days needs medical attention. Call Dr. Radovic or go to an emergency room to rule out a potentially more serious problem.

Always remember to carefully follow Dr. Radovic's instructions regarding your injury or postoperative care.
