BUNION SURGERY

What are bilateral bunions?

A bunion is a common foot problem. It is a deformity (“bump”) on the side of the foot near the big toe and seen both in men and women. Pain can be noted in the joint itself or from pressure on the deformity due to shoe gear and/or activity. Many times the 2nd digit can also be affected leading to a cross-over toe and/or pain in ball of foot.

Bilateral bunions are a bunion deformity noted on the left and right foot.  Bilateral bunions can be treated conservatively or surgically depending on severity of the deformity. At California Foot and Ankle we evaluate your bunions thoroughly and offer customized treatments for your specific deformity making sure to keep your goals in mind.

Bilateral bunion surgery-what is involved

A bunion or bilateral bunions (bunions on both feet) can be treated conservatively and/or surgically depending on severity. At California Foot and Ankle we take x-rays and evaluate the bunion both clinically and radiographically. If surgery is the option, we will discuss the procedure and post surgery care.

Many different procedures exist for bunions depending on severity. The severity will influence your post surgical protocol. Surgical correction involves re-aligning the joint and removing the “bump”. Your surgeon at California Foot and Ankle will discuss the appropriate procedure for your deformity leading to the outcome desired.

Bilateral bunion correction options

Many different procedures exist for bunions depending on severity. The severity will influence your post surgical protocol. Surgical correction involves re-aligning the joint and removing the “bump”. If severity is minimal, you will be able to walk right after surgery in special boot. Your surgeon at California Foot and Ankle will discuss the appropriate procedure for your deformity leading to the outcome desired.

If both bunions are addressed at the same time, you surgeon will prepare you for the post surgery care.

Bunions and Foot Wear

Many people incorrectly believe shoe gear is the cause of bunions.  Bunions occur due to foot type and genetics. Shoe gear can cause irritation and exacerbate the deformity due to inflammation from friction. At California Foot and Ankle, we understand that narrowing your shoe gear choices does not treat your deformity.

Moderation is the key with all shoe types. We will discuss/educate you on your shoe gear. Many patients will bring in their favorite shoes for evaluation.  Our goal, after the treatment of your bunions or any other deformity surgically or conservatively, is to get you back into the shoe gear of your choice.

The large “bump” on the side is also removed allowing the patient to return to previous activities and the shoe of choice. The surgeons at California Foot and Ankle practice only the most advanced surgical techniques on bunion deformities.
